It’s happened – he got down on bended knee with a ring box in hand and proposed. You’re officially engaged! You’ve told both families, called all your closest girlfriends to tell the happy news. Congratulations! You’re super excited….and scared witless. Right? Maybe just a little?
If you’re like most newly engaged women, you fall into one of two categories. You’re either the type who has been dreaming of, and planning her wedding since around the age of five, or you’re the type who shudders in dread at the sheer bulk of work involved in planning a wedding. There is a smaller, sub-category that blends a bit of the two. If we’re honest, every bride panics a little when first faced with all of those details.
One of the first, most important steps to take is to sit down and figure out your guest list. That may sound like something you would want to leave for much later in your planning process, but keep reading and we’ll tell you why it should be at the top of your list. Figuring out your guest list, at least a rough estimate, will help you to take the next step, which is settling on a budget. Once those two vital facts are in place, you can look at the calendar and choose a date. So, give it some thought – what is your ideal reception? Do you want an intimate, close friends and family-only affair, or do you want to throw the event of the season for 300-plus people? Do you want to do all the planning yourself, or do you want to employ the services of a wedding planner? Later, when you’re in the guest-list trenches, this bit of planning will help back up your gut instinct about whether to say yes (or no) to guest-list additions.
Once you have a clear idea of the atmosphere you want for your reception, and the number of guests, things will begin to fall into place. Grab your fiance’ and your calendar and spend some serious time discussing various venues, meal options and nail down something you both can agree upon.
